We have a dedicated team here at GABS, we are all unpaid volunteers and all work tirelessly to help owners with any problems that should arise, from giving advice by telephone, email or in person to finding birds a new family. We have been working for many years as unpaid volunteers for another rescue and have given a home to several special needs birds, who, for one reason or another, cannot be re-homed to the public and these have become our resident birds. It is getting very difficult for these rescues to find good homes. Sadly, this is not the case and the few genuine rescue charities are already struggling to cope with the huge numbers being given up for re-homing ever year. Everyone who has a bird as a companion or in an aviary would be well educated and know exactly what these wonderful characters need. ![]() There would be no such thing as feather plucking or mutilation, no aggression problems or screaming birds. If you find a pigeon (or a dove) in need, please bring the bird indoors to safety and contact those closest and, if needed, ask for referrals to others closer. Make sure that your bird isn’t going to languish neglected in an overcrowded coop or a too small cage, be mauled and killed by predators in an unsafe enclosure or be endangered through sale to ‘feather merchants’. There are some truly horrific fates, fates worse than euthanasia, that can befall birds. Rescuers and sanctuaries are always at risk of having too many birds to properly care for, of tipping over into hoarding. I am thrilled that the surrenderer cares enough to inquire! If the rescue isn’t comfortable answering questions and providing info, take that as a serious red flag. You must evaluate a placement yourself before handing over birds. As a rescuer, I am not insulted when someone wants to know about our care but rather the opposite. ![]() Once you connect with someone, you have to evaluate them! Please do not just turn over birds without knowing what will happen to them and the conditions in which they’ll be kept.
